Lorene Townsend Howard collection on Sapelo Island (Ga.), 1823-1999.

This collection consists primarily of photocopies (with some original copies) of printed publications primarily collected by Lorene Gassert Townsend Howard, librarian at the Sapelo Island Marine Institute, who worked there from 1966 until 1995. The photocopied materials are largely newspaper clippings, but there are also some typescripts, general correspondence, and memos. Dates range from 1823 to 1999 with gaps, the bulk of the items ranging from the early 1960s to the mid-1990s. In addition to some materials already at Sapelo when Howard arrived, friends and colleagues who knew about the collection sent addenda to her. The original clippings and files remain at the Institute.
